About

“The task is nothing less than to reimagine modernity, and in the process to figure ourselves as different kinds of beings than the ones who have built a civilization on the promises, intensities, and fantasies of a particularly dirty, destructive form of energy.”

– Imre Szeman and Dominic Boyer, ‘Introduction: On the Energy Humanities’ in Energy Humanities: An Anthology, 2017.

The Petro-Ambiguity: Energy, Environment, Culture blog was created to record, share and open up ongoing research into the energy and environmental histories of Brunei and the wider Southeast Asian region.

This project seeks to explore the entanglements between energy, environment, climate, society and culture through critical studies of the petro-narratives, petro-aesthetics and petro-histories found within and beyond Brunei and SEA.

Through examination of the embeddedness of oil in virtually every aspect of modern life, we can further understand our own relationships to this natural resource and what is at stake in the ongoing energy transition.
